Postmenopausal women’s skin needs special care because it becomes thinner and drier. The cells and layers of the skin are reduced, as are the cells in the dermis below the skin. Thus, the skin becomes, at a slow rate, atrophic and less collagen and elastic fibers are produced in the skin, while those that exist are restructured and arranged in a different way. The result of these changes is the appearance of fine wrinkles and variegation.

The application of appropriate moisturizing and emollient preparations is essential. The use of lukewarm instead of very hot water is preferable. The skin should be better protected against cold and wind. Low humidity in homes heated by air or cooled by air conditioners in summer can further reduce postmenopausal skin density and increase dryness.
